The Airbus A380 Is Back at Lufthansa — and the New Business Class Is Worth Talking About

The Airbus A380 is the world's largest passenger jet — a double-decker giant that, for many travellers, is the most memorable aircraft they've ever flown on. After several years of uncertainty about whether it had a future, Lufthansa has brought its A380s back into service. And the new ones have something genuinely worth flying for.

The German national airline has refitted the aircraft with its brand-new business class cabin, called Allegris, and it's one of the most thoughtfully designed long-haul business class products of the past decade.

What's special about the new Allegris cabin?

Most airlines offer business class as one product. Lufthansa's approach is different — they've introduced several variations of the business class seat within the same cabin, letting you choose what suits you. It's a bit like booking a hotel: do you want the standard king room, the extra-space room, or the suite?

  • Standard business class — fully lie-flat seat, direct aisle access from every seat, generous storage, and a large screen for entertainment. Modern, comfortable, what you'd expect.
  • Extra Space business — a wider seat with more shoulder room, ideal if you find standard business slightly cramped or if you sleep poorly on flights.
  • Extra Long Bed — for tall travellers who hate the curl-up problem on lie-flat seats. The bed length is significantly longer than standard.
  • Front Row "Suite" — the headline product. A semi-enclosed mini-suite at the front of the cabin with a door, a much larger workspace, and noticeably more privacy. Genuinely competitive with first class on many other airlines.

You can now choose your business class seat the way you'd choose a hotel room — standard, extra space, or suite.

Why the A380 specifically?

A few aircraft just feel different to fly on. The A380 is the most obvious example. It's enormous, surprisingly quiet (because of how the engines are positioned relative to the cabin), and the upper deck — where business class lives — has a particular calm to it. There's no second engine pulling air past your window. The whole thing feels stable, hushed, and somehow grown-up.

On the longest routes — places like Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore, Bangkok — those small comforts add up. By the time you land, you're measurably less tired than you would be on a smaller aircraft.

Where can you fly the new A380?

Lufthansa is reintroducing the A380 to a selection of its most premium long-haul routes from Munich and Frankfurt. Initial destinations include some of the obvious flagship routes — Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo and others — though Lufthansa hasn't committed to a final list and may add routes as more aircraft enter service.

For UK travellers, that means a short connecting flight from London (or another UK city) to Frankfurt or Munich, then onto the A380 long-haul. The connection is well-orchestrated and Lufthansa is a member of the same alliance as several other airlines you might already fly.

Should you book it?

If you fly business class long-haul once or twice a year for an important trip — anniversary, a big family event, a special holiday — then yes, the Allegris cabin is one of the strongest current products. The front row "Suite" variant is particularly worth seeking out.

A few practical notes: not every Lufthansa long-haul flight uses an A380, so when you're booking, check the aircraft type. And the different seat types do sell at different prices — the suite costs more than the standard business class seat.
